Split Rings
SPLIT RINGS IN DEPTH: Here is a somewhat detailed info about split rings since a lot of people ask me about ring sizes and even hook sizes.... There is zero industry size standards on split rings. One companies 3 is another companies 5 and vice versa and they seem to vary greatly from mfg to mfg. Hooks aren't as bad as split rings but there are variances with hooks as well. Let me get into detail about rings and their composition and what it means to the angler. Most people think stainless steel is the best ring. Actually, most stainless steel rings aren't necessarily the best rings to use its actually middle of the road. the best thing about stainless is it's corrosion resistance. It's not the strongest and has decent strength and decent memory (stays open if you stretch it too much) and they are generally cheapest. So if your seeing your split rings stay open after putting them on your bait chances are pretty strong they are generally stainless steel rings... Nickel rings however have great strength, great memory (stays closed better) generally a little more expensive but their corrosion resistance is very low. Zinc rings which is what we use. (don't count the covid years) They have great strength. Great memory (Stays closed better) and a good happy medium on corrosion resistance between Stainless and Nickel rings and are generally middle of the road in price. Thats why we use these rings. Personally I have yet to have a ring even come close in opening up. I have folks catch fish from Murray Cod, Stripers, Colombia Peacocks, tarpon and barracuda with never a problem. The problem is they are a little harder to source. If you make baits for a living like I do you owe it to yourself and customers to be educated on the supplies that you use. I have done a ton of experimenting with different ring materials of the years and such that is why we use the rings that we use. So when people ask ring size we use it kinda depends on what brand rings you order. eyeball test is always a good idea if you can go to a store and look but your SOL if your wanting to order online. However if you get stainless which is the most common ring composition out there i'd get a size bigger than you think you need for the memory issues you might encounter and change out as needed. So the moral of the story is there is no industry standard on split rings and not all split rings are made alike. This is your big bait tip of the week .
